You previously read about METHODS as the third part of the D.O.M.E. Plan—a highly successful planning tool for achieving success in life. The acronym DOME stands for diagnosis, objectives, methods, evaluation. In this post we continue our thoughts on the missing piece and the final part of many sucess plans:
E V A L U A T E.
Failure to evaluate your progress as you pursue your goals is one reason so many people never achieve their New Year’s resolutions. They decide to lose 25lb and wonder why twelve months later they have gained weight rather than lost weight. They did not evaluate their progress. Many were afraid of what the scale would tell them.
Success can be defined in many ways, but I have always liked Albert Grey’s definition of success. He said, “The common denominator of all success lies in forming the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.” Failures do not evaluate their progress on any regular basis. You cannot run a business without timely knowledge and evaluation of your income and expenditure. Joseph Matalon once said to me, “Management gets what it inspects, not what it expects.” Evaluation is about management, and if you cannot manage yourself, you are not likely to be able to manage others.
Develop your DOME plan--Diagnosis, Objectives, Methods and Evaluation. It is worth your investment in time and effort, and could make the difference between average performance and spectacular achievement. Choosing to do the DOME would be one of your most important choices for your career because, “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice.”
